Honest comparison

Test management that doesn't require a Jira tax.

Stride vs Zephyr (SmartBear): test management built into the delivery graph, not bolted onto Jira.

Zephyr is SmartBear's test management for Jira. SmartBear merged Zephyr Squad and Zephyr Scale into one family: Zephyr Essential, formerly Squad, and Zephyr in Standard and Advanced editions, all sold on the Atlassian Marketplace, beside the separate Zephyr Enterprise. Stride bundles test management into a connected delivery platform: test cases live next to the stories they cover and the defects they find, not in a sibling app.

Quick answers

What happened to Zephyr Scale and Zephyr Squad?

SmartBear merged them into one Zephyr family. Zephyr Squad is now Zephyr Essential, and the former Zephyr Scale is now Zephyr, in Standard and Advanced editions; both are sold on the Atlassian Marketplace and run inside Jira. Zephyr Enterprise remains a separate product, priced by quote from 20 users.

How much does Zephyr cost?

Zephyr Standard costs $10 a month in total for up to 10 users, then $6.81 per user a month for 11 to 100. Zephyr Essential is also $10 for up to 10 users, then $5.99 per user. The licence must cover every Jira user, Jira itself is billed separately, and there is a 30-day trial.

What are the best Zephyr alternatives?

Xray is the closest alternative inside Jira, QMetry is free in Jira for up to 10 users, and TestRail and Testmo run outside Jira with Jira integrations. Stride, our product, keeps test cases in the same graph as the stories and defects they cover, without Jira. Our ranking compares them in more depth.

The best test management tools for 2026
Stride is best for

Teams who want test management connected to stories, ADRs and defects in one graph, without paying for Jira and a test app separately.

Zephyr is best for

QA teams already deep in Jira, with mature regression suites, who want test cases versioned and executed inside Jira.

Where Stride wins

  • Test cases live in the same graph as stories, ADRs, defects and release notes, and the traceability matrix derives from those links. Zephyr traces tests through Jira issue links, shown in its built-in traceability reports.
  • No Jira required. Zephyr and Zephyr Essential run only inside Jira; Zephyr Enterprise is a separate product, priced by quote from 20 users.
  • One price for the whole delivery surface: Stride Pro is $39 a seat a month with 1,000 AI credits per seat. Zephyr Standard costs $6.81 per user a month for 11 to 100 users, on top of Jira Standard at $9.70 per user a month for up to 100 users, about $16.50 together for tracking and testing alone.
  • Stride's AI drafts test cases from a story's acceptance criteria inside the tool that holds the story. Zephyr Standard and Advanced generate test cases too, from a Jira work item or a prompt, through the Zephyr Agent for Rovo, which needs Rovo enabled on your Atlassian site.

Where Zephyr wins

  • Zephyr keeps a version history for each test case and highlights what changed between versions (Zephyr Essential does not). Stride shows each test case's run history but keeps no versions of the test case itself.
  • Zephyr imports automation results from Cucumber, JUnit, TestNG, Robot Framework and pytest, and lists integrations with Selenium, Cypress, Playwright and CI/CD tools. Stride reads JUnit XML, which most test runners can write, and results sent over MCP.
  • Zephyr is established where Jira teams buy apps: its main listing has more than 14,000 installs on the Atlassian Marketplace, and Zephyr Essential nearly 10,000 more. Stride is newer, with far fewer teams using it.

Frequently asked

Can I migrate from Zephyr?
Partly. Zephyr exports test cases to Excel or XML, and Stride doesn't import those files: its CSV importer brings in stories and defects, and uploading JUnit XML to a test run creates test cases from the test names it contains. Steps and execution history need rebuilding, so keep a read-only Zephyr export when historical execution data must stay accessible.
Does Stride support BDD / Gherkin?
Partly. Acceptance criteria can be written in Given/When/Then form, and Stride's AI writes them that way; its AI test generator exports the tests it drafts as a Gherkin .feature file. Stride does not import .feature files or run Cucumber.
How does Zephyr compare with Xray?
They are the two most-installed test management apps for Jira Cloud on the Atlassian Marketplace: Xray, from Xblend, part of Sembi, and Zephyr, from SmartBear. Both run inside Jira and include AI test case generation in their Standard editions. Xray Standard costs $7.28 per user a month for 11 to 100 users, against $6.81 for Zephyr Standard.
Does Zephyr need Rovo for its AI?
Yes. The Zephyr Agent for Rovo, which creates test cases from a Jira work item or a prompt, runs through Rovo, so Rovo must be enabled on your Atlassian site. It is included in Zephyr Standard and Advanced at no extra cost, and the test cases it creates are labelled AI_generated.
